Coronavirus suspends the 2020 Social Elections

[subject to further updates]

The four-yearly social elections should normally take place between 11 and 24 May 2020. However they will be suspended in all sectors nationwide due to the coronavirus crisis. Nevertheless, a couple of electoral steps will still have to be completed.

Before the suspension kicks in, the electoral procedure first has to be completed until day X+35. This is the deadline for the submission of the final lists of candidates by the trade unions. Depending on the electoral calendar applicable in your company, day X+35 is between 17 and 30 March 2020.

The electoral procedure will then be “frozen” from day X+36 onwards. This means that the rest of the procedure will be delayed to a date which is still unknown (most likely after the summer).

These measures originate from an informal agreement reached between employers and trade unions on 17 March. The social partners are currently examining the practical details and legal consequences of the agreed suspension. The final formal agreement will then have be ratified and made into binding rules.
